Then he says something blunt about HR catechism, or immigration, or speech inside a company, and suddenly the whole prior record is irrelevant. Saint or bigot. Two buckets. I find that lazy.

Fame is the real prerequisite. Rails made him quotable. Quotable people get framed. I’ve watched this pattern enough times that I don’t need a media studies degree to spot it.

Race isn’t ideology. Stop mashing them.

Here’s my actual gripe.

Race (messy word, contested history). Ethnicity (language, people, ancestry). Ideology (claims about law, God, gender, the state, how we should live). Those are not the same stack. Collapse them and you get garbage like “criticizing a political-religious program is racism” or “noticing parallel norms is hate.”

Islam is not a race. Full stop. It’s a huge religious and legal tradition with internal fights — and with political movements that want public power. Argue they’re misunderstood. Argue they’re right. Fine. What I won’t do is pretend every secular critique is a blood attack on “brown people.” That’s ideology borrowing the moral armor of anti-racism. Cheap trick. Works great on Twitter.

Most of what gets DHH in trouble, as far as I can tell, is some mix of: won’t recite the HR script, defends viewpoint diversity at work, or says liberal societies get to set expectations for newcomers. You can hate those takes. Still argue the takes. Don’t start with the kill-word.

Diluting “racist” hurts the people the word was supposed to protect

I grew up with the older meaning. Racist meant treating people as lesser because of race — hiring doors shut, housing denied, violence excused, law applied unevenly. Ugly, concrete, often measurable. You could point at a pattern and say: that.

• Dissenters inside minority communities get crushed. Black, brown, immigrant writers who break with the catechism — on policing, religion, schools, borders — get the same kill-word. The message is: stay on script or you’re a race traitor. That is not protection. That is a loyalty test wearing anti-racist clothes.
• Data gets harder to discuss. Group differences in crime, test scores, family structure, or migration outcomes are radioactive if any notice is “racism.” So public policy runs on slogans. The people most exposed to bad policy are often the least insulated by money and zip code.
• Real bigots get cover. When “racist” means “awkward,” actual racial hatred blends into the noise. The word stops sorting monsters from heretics.

So no — this is not “both sides” mush. Dilution is not a free upgrade to kindness. It is a transfer of credibility away from people who still need the old meaning intact.

If you care about people of color as people, not mascots, you should want the word racist to stay expensive. Spend it on hierarchy and harm. Do not spend it on DHH missing a vibes check.

China gets systems. We get sermons.

Weird double standard, and I’ll be short about it.

When Western press talks Beijing — United Front, diaspora pressure, campus stuff, platform propaganda — it often sounds almost calm. Statecraft. Sharp power. Technocracy. When the same outlets talk migration, Islamism, or speech taboos in our own cities, it snaps into identity and sin. One file is geopolitics. The other is a morality play with a villain slot.

China’s a useful mirror, not a model I want. Party-state, technocratic, ranks stability and narrative control over individual speech. You can despise that bargain and still notice they name ideology as ideology. We often do the opposite: smuggle ideology in as “diversity,” then call people who name it racists.

No, DHH isn’t Xi. Basecamp isn’t the Politburo. I’m talking about method. If you can analyze Chinese info ops as systems, you can analyze Western taboo systems as systems too — including the career incentives for calling a Danish Rails guy a racist because he skipped the catechism.

Why I care on this site
