Huawei denies violating sanctions against Iran and stealing American trade secrets. The company says its edge comes from hundreds of billions of dollars in R&D, more than 165,000 active patents, and a customer base of roughly three billion people across 170-plus countries. Prosecutors tell a different story: that Huawei hid control of Skycom, used it to do business in Iran, and lied about the relationship while employees claimed only limited Iran operations.

Meng’s 2018 Vancouver arrest, years of Canadian custody, and 2021 deferred prosecution agreement remain the human face of the dossier. Meng signed that four-page statement under a deferred prosecution deal that got the criminal charges against her dismissed. In it she admitted lying to a financial institution about Huawei’s compliance with sanctions and export controls — the Iran banking story that put her under nearly three years of Canadian house arrest after the 2018 Vancouver arrest.

“Meng Wanzhou was – and remains – Huawei Tech’s chief financial officer,” Donnelly wrote. Huawei, in the court’s view, does not get to pretend the CFO’s on-the-job statement is somebody else’s problem. The judge also swatted away the pitch that prosecutors somehow violate Huawei’s silence rights by using a confession Meng already put on paper. She does not need to take the stand for the statement to land.

Huawei did not answer a request for comment. The company still faces trade-secret and other counts; the U.S. has squeezed its access to American tech since 2019 on national-security grounds, which Huawei denies. After Meng flew home to a hero’s welcome in 2021, Huawei leaned harder into China-side auto parts and AI. Jury selection in the corporate case is set for September 8.

The progressive foreign-policy set will recycle the hostage-diplomacy greatest hits and call every indictment a hate crime against a Chinese brand. Fine. A federal judge just said the CFO’s own signed words are fair game against the mothership. That is not a sanctions tweet. That is a trial exhibit.
