On the PolitiCap board that lands next to a bill many treated as closed business. In March 2026, JA21 tabled initiative legislation to keep the Groningen gas field designated as a strategic emergency reserve rather than sealing remaining wells for good. Party leader Joost Eerdmans called permanent closure “the blunder of the century,” citing high prices, foreign LNG dependence, and geopolitical risk. The government rejected reopening Groningen; earthquake safety and permanent shutdown after 2024 remained the official line. There was no majority then.

The field still holds a large remaining volume in the ground. JA21’s pitch was never full commercial restart: limited access in genuine crisis only, framed as insurance after wells had already started to be sealed. Opponents and the State Supervision of Mines have long argued that any restart path is unsafe. NAM wanted no role running non-commercial “strategic” wells. That fight looked settled on paper. That is exactly the scenario JA21 wrote into its March bill — and exactly the scenario cabinet politics said would not require Groningen as a last-resort option.
